Identification of spatial hotspots for road safety improvement: Case of Northern Ireland
نویسنده
چکیده
In recent years, the concept of composite performance index, brought from economic and business statistics, has become increasingly used in the field of road safety. The construction of the composite safety performance index (CSPI) involves the following key steps: the selection of the most appropriate indicators to be aggregated and the method used to aggregate them. Over the last decade, various aggregation methods for estimating the CSPI have been suggested in the literature. However, recent studies indicates that most of these methods suffer from many deficiencies at both the theoretical and operational level; these include the correlation and compensability between indicators, as well as their high “degree of freedom” which enables one to readily manipulate them to produce desired outcomes [7], [8], [9]. In this study, we introduce an alternative non-linear aggregation method for the estimation of the CSPI, which is then used to identify and rank temporal and spatial hotspots for Northern Ireland. The obtained results highlight the stability and consistency of the proposed method, through a successful reduction in the deficiencies associated with traditional aggregation methods. Furthermore, the developed method can be viewed as an intelligent support system for road safety evaluation.

Lagging Behind – The Emerging Influence of Jet Lag Symptoms on Road Safety
Road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death in international travelers. With the growth of international travel, the number of visitors who rent a vehicle upon arrival at their destination by air or by sea is expected to increase. Jet lag is a well-recognized maladaptation to international travel across multiple time zones. Little is known about the possible influence of jet lag sympt...
متن کاملEvaluation and Statistical Validation of Black-Spots Identification Methods
Despite the identification of crash hotspots as a first step of the roads safety management process, with various effective black spots identification (HSID) methods, only a few researchers have compared the performance of these methods; also it is not clear which test is the most consistent in the black-spots identification. In this research, seven commonly applied HSID methods (accident frequ...

متن کاملIdentification and Prioritization of Accident-Prone Segments using International Roughness Index
During last decades, owing to the increase in a number of vehicles, the rate of accident occurrence grows significantly. Efforts must be made to provide efficient tools to prioritize segments requiring safety improvement and identify influential factors on accidents. This objective of the research was to determine the safety oriented threshold of International Roughness Index (IRI) to recognize...

Insufficient attention has been paid to physical trauma as a cause of morbidity and mortality in international travellers, despite travellers themselves ranking it among their most important pre-travel health concerns. Road traffic collisions (RTCs) are the most common cause of death in younger travellers. One of the significant factors contributing to motorist accidents is tourists’ disorienta...
